Euclid unveils its first scientific results

30/05/2024 - 11:00

The first scientific results from Euclid, the European space cosmology mission, were unveiled on Thursday May 23, 2024: 15 scientific papers, including 5 general ones about the space mission, its instruments and processing, and 10 on the first astrophysical observations. These first observations and articles confirm Euclid's performances, and mark the start of the “Euclid era” for cosmology. The nominal mission will last 6 years, with partial data delivery within 1 year, and the first data delivery within 2 years.

A special seminar was also being held at the IAS on the same day. A few IAS members highlighted the historical aspects of the mission, cosmology, instrumentation, the scientific ground segment, galaxy clusters for cosmology, cross-correlation with the CMB, and the unveiling of the latest images have been discussed. A demonstration of the CU (VIS Calibration Unit) was also performed.

The main contributions from IAS to the Euclid mission were highlighted:

  • Instrumentation, with delivery of the VIS Calibration Unit and the use of the calibration station for numerous upstream tests;
  • The scientific ground segment (SGS), with a strong contribution to OU-MER and LE3;
  • Scientific analysis within the scientific working groups, several of which are (or have been) (co)-led by IAS members: cross-correlations with the cosmological background, galaxy clusters for cosmology and galaxy protoclusters.
